Three Talks on Prayer Given in 1895
Talks that will help deepen your walk with the Lord (15 000 words)
After arriving back from his tour of America in the autumn of 1895, Andrew Murray had become such a sought after preacher that he was invited to speak to vast crowds at Exeter Hall.
But just before he was due to leave for South Africa, the organizers of his tour requested that he speak on prayer at a much smaller gathering of full-time workers and interested Christians.
These, then, are the three talks he gave on that occasion.
The first deals with JESUS' DESIRE FOR US TO BE ONE. And the only way this can happen, says Murray, is for the love of God to be shed abroad in our hearts. We will then have the power to effectively pray for others and the coming of God's Kingdom.
The second talk focuses on THE SECRET OF EFFECTUAL PRAYER. It stresses the need to submit to the Spirit's teaching, and to give ourselves to Him, as the Spirit of Intercession, to pray in us.
The third talk, WITH WINGS AS EAGLES, teaches us how to wait upon God. It is as we wait that He will reveal himself to us and keep our spirits continually renewed. Murray also points to God's promises in Isaiah 644 that tells us that as we wait, we can expect to receive something utterly beyond our comprehension.
These insightful talks are just as applicable to us today as to those Christians at Exeter Hall in 1895.

Andrew Murray at Exeter Hall Three Talks on Prayer Given in 1895 edition by Andrew Murray Religion Spirituality eBooks
This short ebook captures three talks Murray addressed to the leaders of a congregation he had spent some months with in London. All three talks cover some aspect of prayer. I found the second and third to be the most relevant for myself. The second talk is titled the "The Secret of Effectual Prayer" which Murray sums up to be, in humility, we acknowledge that we don't know what to pray and so we open our hearts for the Spirit to guide our prayer time. If we come too often with a set agendas then we don't allow the Spirit to be in charge which is what effectual prayer is dependent upon.
The third talk was on the significance of waiting on the Lord and is a short study of that wonderful verse in Isaiah: "Those that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; …" (Isaiah 40:31). In question and answer format (as he does with the other talks) he outlines how we wait, why it's important, and the significance of having eagles wings.
Murray manages to make difficult concepts (e.g., how does one wait upon the Lord?) practical and implementable. I so appreciate his teaching and I'm off to purchase a few more of his works especially as they are so affordable on Kindle.

Andrew Murray at Exeter Hall Three Talks on Prayer Given in 1895 edition by Andrew Murray Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
We can now all HEAR the gifted man ourselves - speaking across time, with time-enduring insight and though-provoking truths. Marvellous!
What an inspiration! If you know the Lord and you are looking for timeless words. This is for you! If you live in Ghana or South Africa Olea had done it very well. What made Andrew?
Timeless Truths for practical Christian Living
An excellent book for those seeking inspiration in their Christian lives. Andrew Murray’s three short messages will challenge you to love with a softer heart, to pray with a stronger faith and to walk with God with a more surrendered will. This book, though short in length, is weighty in content. It carries with it the challenge to shake off apathy and to embrace and seek after a more vital, growing and flourishing faith. It most importantly shows us how this can be done. Olea has also included interesting background information on Andrew Murray. This helps us see that the character of the preacher and of his message were one. He lived what he believed, and by God’s grace, so too can we. A thoroughly enjoyable book and edifying to read.
Exeter Hall was a refreshing read. Andrew Murray honed in on the crux of New Testament teaching. Not too long, but with deep, important thoughts, that make one pause and think that this needs lots of contemplation. I particularly loved his practical way of presenting truth. There are no old-worldly long and involved sentences. He makes one feel that he is giving the listener an insight into an important secret. A compelling read and I recommend it. Mariana Nesbitt
No one expresses God’s sympathy for the believer’s weakness (weakness toward Godly living) like Andrew Murray. He manages to challenge the reader to step up to the high calling of God without causing us to fall over the precipice of fear – or worse yet – self effort. The first message shows us how the Father desires personal, intimate union with us and how that relationship will lead to unity with others. Then Murray tells us we are not left to ourselves to learn how to pray. Then he deals with our tendency to feel the weight of God’s requirements and how we take them on as burdens. He says we “allow the flesh and the world to chain us to the earth” when, in fact, we can soar in His strength as with eagles’ wings. The life we live as Christians is a heavenly life – it’s His life. Andrew Murray brings that truth home to our hearts.
More than 100 years ago Andrew Murray gave three talks on prayer in London, before he returned to the Cape. Soon after I've started to read his talks, the printed words became words that stirred up my spirit, leaving an imprint on my heart. Such conviction, love and compassion can only compel us to search our hearts humbly and truthfully. Not only did Andrew Murray talked about prayer, but he'd set out to teach and guide us through the Word what true and effective prayer is. If you are serious about you're prayer life, this is a must to read. Andrew Murray is as relevant today as he has been in the 1800's. The summary on his life is a much needed introduction to today's Christian world. A well researched and condensed summary. Well done to Olea Nel!
Many thanks to Olea Nel for getting these talks into print so that we can benefit from them! Murray writes with simplicity and clarity, yet with a depth that challenges not only our understanding but our hearts. For me these talks speak afresh to me of my need of total devotion to Jesus daily, all day, to complete dependence on him, complete confidence in him, and alertness to his will, which is both given to us in his once-for-all-Word in Scripture but also spontaneously through the Spirit applying it in our hearts moment by moment. I encourage readers of this review to read these talks, slowly--there's a lot to take in--you'll be lifted up on eagle's wings in prayer!
